The 2008 Women Meeting Challenges - Making Change Conference is pleased to announce Carolyn Thomas as our guest speaker! Carolyn was born in Midland, Texas, on July 26, 1970. Raised by her grandmother and mother. She grew up in a strong, faith environment and attended church on a regular basis. During high school she participated and excelled in track and drama.

She grew up carefree and enjoyed spending time with her friends and mom. After graduation from Midland High School, she moved to Waco, Texas. she attended a local community college. She later decided to explore the workforce in Waco and worked various jobs.

In 1995, she met the man who would change her life forever. Throughout their eight year relationship, she was caged from the outside world. She experienced helplessness, powerlessness, isolation, control, manipulations, fear, intimidation, and loss of self by an abusive partner on various levels. The abusive relationship progressed to a lethal

plateau over time.

On December 5, 2003, Carolyn suffered catastrophic facial injuries when her abuser shot her at point-blank range. She was not expected to live. By God's hand she survived. Carolyn has had 11 reconstructive surgeries at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas over a two year period. While recovering she discovered her purpose, to tell her story to all willing to listen.

Carolyn's miraculous, powerful, and inspirational story has touched so many that various media outlets have been attracted to her and continues to be attracted to her story. Carolyn has changed so many lives and provided hope to thousands-not just victims/survivors of domestic violence, which she is not even aware of. People all over the United States, Europe, and the West Indies have been impacted by her story and choice to share the intimate details of her life with strangers.

After graduating Marlon joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Arizona for a short while and then was shipped to Camp Doha, Kuwait - Desert Storm. After being in Kuwait for six months, Marlon returned home to wed the love of his life Terri. On the second day of their honeymoon Marlon and Terri were struck head on by a drunk driver. Check out one of our featured guest scheduled to perform at our Women Meeting Challenges - Making Change Conference. Kia Calloway is a R&B, hip hop, and pop singer. She is not just any Baltimore women with stars in her eyes. Her father was killed before she was born. Her mother used drugs and died of HIV when she was a teenager. A lot of artist have two parents by their side, she said. "I didn't have that, the only thing that I did was I prayed and I prayed and I prayed. And I followed my heart. And I kept at it."

Kia formed her own management group - Calloway Management. She independently released her first album last year, titled It's Not A Game. Kia performs mostly local shows, doing a lot of Baltimore Believe events and AIDS benefits, while also singing at clubs and schools. "I believe in giving back to the community, " she said.

She hopes that she can serve as a role model to young women in Baltimore, young women like her, who grew up in unfortunate circumstances. Listen to a sample of some of Kia's work...

The 2008 Women Meeting Challenges - Making Change Conference is pleased to announce Ms. Bessie A. Winn (Miss Black Georgia USA 2006) as the host of the conference!

With an extensive background in beauty and pageantry, Bessie a Georgia Peach by way of Ghana West Africa was a contestant in the 2003 Miss Georgia USA pageant and a finalist in the Today's Black Women Magazine Beauty Competition. In April of 2006, Ms. Winn was crowned Miss Black Georgia USA 2006. The philanthropic beauty used her reign as a vehicle to create awareness about teenage domestic violence, as well as an empowerment tool for past survivors.

Ms. Winn devotes her time to the non-profit "BreakFree", an organization she co-founded that aims to promote and educate the nation about teenage domestic violence. Bessie has been featured in periodicals such as VIBE Vixen, the Atlanta Voice, Rolling Out, and was selected and featured in the July 2007 issue of EBONY magazine as one of the nations top Bachelorettes. Bessie Winn has landed roles in Feature films, commercials, and local theatre productions.

Bessie Winn is currently working on a self help work book for teens that will be used not only as a self empowerment too, but will also touch on teen dating violence, positive self esteem and self image, and the importance of pursuing your dreams.

Ms. Winn says, "Achievement most often takes place under conditions that are less than ideal. Just because there is some problem or difficulty or shortcoming in your life at the moment, it does not prevent you from moving forward"...

In December of 1997, Johnaa' won 1st place in an audition for "Tour de France", an international hip-hop show in Paris, France, there she performed with recording artist Tonya Blunt. She has also performed at the Lincoln Theatre, numerous talent shows, and with D.C. go-go bands and local open mics.

Johnaa has also been featured in several hip-hop competitions and local video music cable productions. Recently she performed as one of 5 semi-finalists in the Pantene Pro-Voice Competition held in Central Park, New York City.

Johnaa', has established her own publishing company called PumpkinSeed Entertainment, LLC and is in the process of releasing a screen-play. Her songs speak about a women's everyday life! Listen to a sample of some of Johnaa' work...

Chosen the Poet has performed alongside some of the greatest poets and Hip Hop Artists of our time. From the International rock band "RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE to SAMMIE the R&B sensation. This spoken word Poet has also performed with the Tony award winning Def Poets on Broadway. This young native from Liberty, New York has been writing since the young age of 13, making impact on the structural blueprints used to build historical moments.

As a touring artist for the last 3 years he has performed in over 15 different states and dozens of colleges. In late 2006 on his second U.S. Tour Chosen ranked in at 2nd place as one of the top 10 poets to compete in the D.C. Baltimore area. Not only is he making noise on stage this young man is also making noise on television. You may recall seeing him on MTV, HBO and B.E.T. performing.

Current projects for this young talented genius include his first poetry book entitled "The Struggle Within" and his debut on the upcoming film on underground Hip Hop and Poetry due to be released soon.
